As part of the UK Government’s commitment to eliminating Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG), the Government are launching an Honour-Based Abuse Campaign, to raise awareness of some of the illegal and harmful behaviours that are still prevalent today.

As part of our 16 Days of Action, we’re proud to introduce “The Roots of Honour Based Abuse” animation, a powerful visual story designed to educate and inspire. Created for our recently updated training, this video explores the deeply rooted beliefs and values that underpin Honour Based Abuse (HBA) and highlights the journey survivors take to break free and rebuild their lives.

The Forced Marriage Domestic Legislation Database (“Legibase”) compiles the constitutional, criminal, labour, civil and family laws in all 193 UN Member states on forced marriage and minimum age of marriage in one comprehensive resource.

Sara’s stepmother, Beinash Batool, claimed she had been a victim of HBA, having been placed in a refuge as a teenager. Sara, just 10 years old, endured severe injuries, adding to the heartbreak surrounding this case.

Karma Nirvana is deeply concerned by the findings in the Home Office’s publication of the 2024 data on Honour-Based Abuse (HBA) offences recorded by police forces across England and Wales. It highlights significant gaps in the identification, recording, and reporting of HBA incidents.

Suzanne Jackson, a dedicated member of South Yorkshire Police and KN trained officer, has been awarded an MBE for her outstanding contributions to the prevention of violence against women and girls (VAWG).

Karma Nirvana Reports 17% Increase in Honour Based Abuse Cases from Annual Data Release, as Victims Face Growing Barriers to Support

Today, the Home Secretary has announced a series of vital new measures aimed at combating domestic abuse and violence towards women and girls, including the introduction of ‘Raneem’s Law.’

Karma Nirvana is offering a free training seminar for social workers and police officers on the 28th November. Delivered by our Executive Director Natasha Rattu, this seminar will provide essential guidance and knowledge to enhance the identification, prevention, and response to child marriage cases.

Although this is the third FGM conviction, this is the first conviction of conspiracy to commit FGM in England and Wales. It is also the first case of a conspiracy to commit Forced Marriage since the implementation of the Marriage and Civil Partnership (Minimum Age) Act in 2023, which raised the legal age of marriage to 18, even with parental consent.

Today, we unveiled a memorial bench at Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh in memory of Fawziyah Javed on the 3rd Year Anniversary of her murder. We hope this bench will serve as a lasting tribute to an extraordinary woman whose life was tragically cut short, and whose spirit continues to inspire all who knew her.
