As part of our 16 Days of Action, we’re proud to introduce “The Roots of Honour Based Abuse” animation, a powerful visual story designed to educate and inspire. Created for our recently updated training, this video explores the deeply rooted beliefs and values that underpin Honour Based Abuse (HBA) and highlights the journey survivors take to break free and rebuild their lives.
Understanding Honour-Based Abuse
Honour-Based Abuse is a form of domestic abuse motivated by the belief that an individual has, or may, bring ‘dishonour’ or ‘shame’ to their family or community. This abuse often prioritises ‘honour’ over individual safety and wellbeing, justifying harmful behaviours such as forced marriage, coercive control, disownment, or even physical harm.
While the roots of Honour-Based Abuse run deep, it is not a cultural tradition or religious practice. Abuse is abuse – regardless of how perpetrators justify it. It can occur in any community or background, and no one has the right to harm or control another person.
A Visual Journey
Through the symbolism of a growing tree, the video illustrates:
- How Honour-Based Abuse takes root from an early age, shaping individuals’ lives.
- The challenges survivors face as they try to break free from these deeply ingrained beliefs.
- The hope and strength survivors can find as they rebuild their lives with the right support.
The video also highlights the critical role of organisations like Karma Nirvana in supporting survivors and victims, and empowering them to thrive.
