About the tool
Karma Nirvana has developed this screening tool alongside the tool guidance to support frontline professionals. The screening toolkit helps to identify potential HBA and decide what support might be required. As the first of its kind, the guided questions are based on the common indicators for Honour Based Abuse and scores cases for the likelihood of HBA.
The FREE tool will be available online and incorporates decades of experience from our helpline, including from our Survivor Ambassador Panel, which can support professionals to ask questions aimed at identifying HBA in cases.
What this tool can do:
- Support professionals in identifying HBA
- Guide professionals on what questions to ask to support HBA identification in their work
- Evaluate whether a professional should contact us for more support with an HBA case
What this tool can’t do:
- Assess case risk – This tool is designed to identify common HBA factors, and can’t assess risk
- Confirm HBA – This tool does not confirm HBA and does not replace professional judgement
- Signpost cases to Karma Nirvana – This tool does not replace direct communication with Karma Nirvana
Why This Matters
Honour Based Abuse remains misunderstood, and cases with HBA require careful handling. Many professionals contacting our helpline find HBA difficult to identify in cases and professionals require specialist knowledge and tools to ensure early intervention. Victims often face multiple barriers to seeking help and often report poor understanding from safeguarding professionals about their circumstances. This screening tool provides guided questions based on common indicators of HBA, helping professionals assess HBA accurately and take appropriate action, leading to better support for victims and more confidence in handling HBA cases.
