Learning the Lessons Magazine: Karma Nirvana’s Push for Change on Honour Based Abuse

The #Push4Change campaign featured in the latest edition of the IOPC’s Learning the Lessons magazine.

Karma Nirvana’s #Push4Change campaign is featured in the latest edition of the IOPC’s Learning the Lessons magazine, spotlighting why a statutory definition of Honour Based Abuse (HBA) is urgently needed, and what this means for frontline policing.

In the article, Pushing for change: the charity supporting police to deal with honour-based abuse, we share our work with police forces across the country to improve the identification, response, and safeguarding of victims affected by HBA and forced marriage. The piece explores why current definitions are falling short, what a statutory definition could achieve, and how our helpline and training support better outcomes.

What’s in the article?

The police play a crucial role in protecting those at risk of HBA, but they cannot do it alone. Establishing a statutory definition, raising awareness of specialist support services, and equipping officers with the right training will ensure a whole-sector response that truly safeguards victims. Karma Nirvana is calling on policing bodies to work with us to create a system that not only responds to HBA, but also prevents it.

We urge officers and frontline professionals to engage with our training, use our helpline, and support the #Push4Change campaign. Because when it comes to HBA, the right response can save lives.
