We are heartbroken by the murder of Salam Alshara, a 27-year-old mother of four, brutally killed by her husband in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire. Described in court as “jealous and controlling,” Wahib Albaradan has been sentenced to life with a minimum term of 19 years and six months.
Salam’s murder was not a spontaneous act—it was the tragic end of prolonged coercive control rooted in patriarchal entitlement and distorted ideas of ‘honour’. Albaradan’s actions and beliefs reflect the very attitudes Karma Nirvana works to challenge every day.
This case is a devastating reminder that Honour Based Abuse (HBA) remains a grave threat in the UK. It cuts across cultures, thrives in silence, and traps victims in fear. Salam’s story is tragically familiar—our helpline hears from countless others facing similar dangers.
We extend our deepest condolences to Salam’s loved ones and her four young children. But sympathy alone is not enough.
We urgently call for:
- Greater recognition of HBA by frontline professionals
- Stronger safeguarding frameworks
- Mandatory HBA training across police, social care, education and health
- A statutory definition and guidance on HBA
Salam deserved a life free from fear. We honour her memory by demanding action.
