We welcome today’s verdict, which finds Habibur Masum guilty of the murder of his wife, Kulsuma Akter, a young mother who was brutally killed while pushing her baby in a pram with a friend, after fleeing an abusive and controlling relationship.
Kulsuma’s murder was not an isolated act of violence. It followed a clear and escalating pattern of coercive control, threats, and stalking, culminating in a horrific and calculated attack. Despite taking brave steps to leave and seek protection, Kulsuma’s abuser tracked her down, manipulated services to lure her out, and ultimately took her life.
We are devastated by this tragic loss and stand in solidarity with Kulsuma’s family and all those affected. Sentencing will take place on the 22nd July.
This case is a stark reminder of the urgent need to:
- Recognise Honour Based Abuse in all its forms
- Take stalking, coercive control, and threats seriously
- Strengthen protection for those fleeing abuse
We call on statutory agencies to reflect on what more can be done to prevent further tragedies. Everyone deserves safety, freedom, and dignity.
We will remember Kulsuma.
